Air Fares
you will often hear travel agencies and airline staff referring to different fare types and class of booking. Here is an easy guide / meaning of the terms / jargon frequently used in the travel industry.

Classes of Travel
There are usually three main classes of travel on long-distance routes: First - known by the designators 'F' or 'P'. On most aircraft, features include gourmet food and either sleeper seats or even couchettes. Business - known by the designators 'J' or 'C' and also called 'Club Class'. Features superior food, service and seating economy - known by the designator 'Y' and sometimes known as 'Tourist' or 'Coach'. Other - Some airlines have their own class system. These will be advised at the time of your enquiry. British Airways and Air France also has a special Concorde Class for travel on that aircraft.

  • Advance purchase fares - these tickets must be booked and paid for in full a certain number of days before departure. Your travel consultant can advise of restrictions applicable to particular fares.

  • Length of Stay
Although normal air tickets are generally valid for 12 months, most excursion fares and many discount fares have either a minimum or maximum stay requirement (or both). This is to restrict their flexibility and make them less attractive to business travelers who generate a large proportion of scheduled airlines' revenues. Examples are a minimum stay of 7 days and a maximum of 3 months. Some airlines make the minimum stay requirement on shorter sectors, such as New York, a Saturday night, again ideal for the leisure traveler but not so for the businessman.
  • Air passes - special discounted airfares available to international travelers on domestic airlines in Australia, USA, etc. These passes usually have to be purchased before arrival in the country and in connection with the international air ticket. Such passes permit travel over several sectors for a fixed price and represent excellent value. Ask your travel consultant for details.
  • Code-sharing
Airlines working in partnership on certain routes often offer through flights under one flight number even though changes of aircraft and carrier may be involved en-route, e.g. on a Qantas flight from Sydney to Toronto, passengers change to Canadian Airlines International at Honolulu or Continental Airlines flights may be operated by Virgin Atlantic.
  • Complaints
In the rare event of a complaint regarding any aspect of service provided by or through BTS, an immediate acknowledgement would always be followed by a thorough investigation and explanation.
  • Direct Flights
Be careful of definitions of direct flights. A direct flight is normally defined as one which operates without a change of aircraft between two points - it is not necessarily non-stop, e.g. British Airways operates direct to Sydney with flights which go via Bangkok.
  • Connecting Flights
See also 'Code Sharing' Many airlines offer through flights under the same flight number, which may involve a change of aircraft en route, e.g., a Qantas Airways flight from London to Brisbane may require a change of aircraft in Singapore. Other connecting flights can be booked at through fares from domestic points in the UK to link with international services, e.g. British Midland from Edinburgh to London, connecting with Singapore Airlines to Singapore.
  • Check-In
Always plan to arrive at the airport in plenty of time to check-in for your flight. As a rule, you should check-in at least one hour before departure time if in First or Business Class and two hours before if in Economy. Your travel consultant or the airline will advise. Early check-in will also ensure a better choice of seating where this has not been booked in advance.
  • Confirmations
Flight confirmations are made at the time of booking and can be either held on option for a limited period, or confirmed at the price quoted by payment of the full amount.
  • Hubs
Many airlines operate flights and connections on a hub-and-spoke basis via one main airport, e.g. Delta Airlines to Orlando will involve a change of aircraft at Atlanta, Singapore Airlines to Cairns, a change at Singapore. This allows airlines optimum use of capacity, using bigger aircraft on long sectors and smaller ones on lower density local routes, ultimately resulting in more competitive prices.
  • Children - children between the ages of 2 and 11 inclusive normally travel at 50% or 67% or 70% of the applicable adult fare. This varies according to airline and fare type - your travel consultant will advise you at time of booking.
  • Domestic - the name given to fares applicable for travel within one particular country only.
  • Emigrant - special fares and extra baggage allowances may be available to bona-fide emigrants, please ask your travel consultant for details.
  • Excursion - a term given to airfares, which involve some form of restriction, e.g. a minimum or maximum stay requirement. Cost to change or refund usually applies.
  • Infants - normally travel at 10% of the applicable normal or non-discounted adult airfare.
  • International - as distinct from Domestic, applies to fares between countries.
  • One-way - such fares are rarely half the round-trip fare except in the case of full fares. However, there are one-way excursion fares to some destinations, which are good value - asks your travel consultant for details.
  • Open-jaw - the term given to a return fare which permits travel between different points, e.g. London-Los Angeles, San Francisco-London or Manchester-Singapore, Singapore-London. Either the return fare to the furthest point is charged or the sum of the two half-return fares.
  • Round the world - airlines do sometimes fly all round the world, United Airlines for example have a service, but many have joined together to offer specially discounted airfare combinations on a variety of routings. These represent exceptional value. For example Delta Air Lines across the Atlantic with Qantas through the Pacific, Australia and the Far East.
  • Seasonality - High season - many excursion fares are more expensive at certain popular times of the year, e.g. Christmas or Easter. If you plan to travel near the beginning or end of a high season, it may be worth altering your travel dates to take advantage of lower fares.
  • Seasonality - Low season - the least expensive time to travel, usually outside normal holiday periods when airlines traditionally have many empty seats. A good time to look for bargains.
  • Seasonality - Shoulder season - a term often given to a fare season between low and high.
  • Senior citizen - on some routes, special senior citizen fares are available. However, BTS's discounted fares are usually more flexible and better value.
  • Sector fares - as opposed to 'through fares', are fares charged and shown on a sector-by-sector basis, e.g. a Johannesburg-Durban fare in addition to the international fare into South Africa.
  • Student - on some routes, special student fares are available. However, BTS's discounted fares are usually more flexible and better value.
  • Through fares - as opposed to sector fares are those, which permit stopovers en-route at either nominal or no additional charge, e.g. a London-Brisbane fare that allows breaks of journey in Bangkok and Singapore or London-Los Angeles with a stopover in Chicago.
  • Youth - from time to time special fares are available for youths, normally under 16 years to certain destinations. Your travel consultant will advise on details.
  • Zones (time)
As the world is divided into time zones UTC (Universal Time Co-ordinated), previously known as Greenwich Mean Time. All flight arrival and departure times are shown as 'local times', based on the 24-hour clock. e.g. 1730 hours - 5.30pm. Your travel consultant can advise you what your actual elapsed journey time is.

There are also many areas of the world where malaria is endemic and simple precautions can prevent a spoilt holiday or worse. You must also be more and more aware of HIV, so do avoid unnecessary medical or dental treatment; always use a condom if having sex with a new partner; never inject with or share used needles/syringes; never have acupuncture, a tattoo or ears, nose, etc. pierced with un sterilized equipment - and don't forget alcohol and drugs can affect your judgment. • Smoking
This is prohibited on many flights as increasing numbers of airlines introduce no-smoking routes. In many countries it is also illegal to smoke in aircraft on domestic flights or on flights below a certain length. The majority of seats on most aircraft are now in no-smoking compartments - it is therefore advisable to reserve your seat in advance to avoid disappointment. Many airports also prohibit smoking either completely. If you wish to either travel on, or to avoid, no-smoking flights, please ask your travel consultant at the time of booking.
